Karachi: Air Pollution Rises Due to Low Rainfall, Surge in Asthma and Lung Diseases

Karachi is witnessing a rise in asthma and lung-related illnesses as a result of increased air pollution caused by low rainfall during this year’s monsoon season.

‎According to pulmonologist Dr. Javed Khan, there has been a 30% increase in patients suffering from respiratory issues, with around 10 new patients visiting private hospitals daily.

‎Meanwhile, public hospitals are reporting over 80 patients per day presenting with respiratory complaints, hospital authorities revealed.

‎Dr. Javed Khan explained that the humid weather is worsening asthma and breathing problems. The lack of rainfall has kept the air quality index poor, and the increased humidity reduces oxygen levels in the air. This leads to the narrowing of airways, aggravating asthma and lung diseases.

‎He advised citizens to wear masks and avoid exposure to polluted air and smoke. He also recommended people with respiratory allergies to avoid cold items, chilled drinks, and ice cream.
