Bangladesh’s ongoing measles outbreak has continued to claim lives, with the overall reported death toll reaching 997 after three more children died from measles-like symptoms within 24 hours. The latest figures were reported by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The three latest deaths were classified as suspected measles fatalities, adding to the country’s growing number of deaths associated with the outbreak. According to the latest report, the outbreak has also produced a large number of suspected and confirmed cases.

Health authorities recorded 1,156 new suspected measles cases during the latest 24-hour reporting period, taking the nationwide suspected case total to more than 165,000. In addition, dozens of new confirmed infections were reported.

The scale of the outbreak has placed continued pressure on Bangladesh’s healthcare system. Thousands of patients have required hospital treatment since the outbreak intensified, while a large number have subsequently recovered and been discharged.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that can spread rapidly among people who have not developed immunity. Children are particularly vulnerable to severe complications, which can include pneumonia, dehydration, brain inflammation and other serious health problems.

The continuing deaths and new infections highlight the importance of vaccination, early diagnosis and timely medical treatment. Health authorities and healthcare workers face the challenge of identifying suspected cases quickly while limiting further transmission.

The latest figures underline the seriousness of the prolonged outbreak and the need for sustained public-health measures, particularly efforts to improve vaccination coverage and protect vulnerable children.
