Bird Strike Incidents Surge at Airports in 2025

Karachi (Rustam Ali) — In 2025, a significant rise has been recorded in bird strike incidents at airports across Pakistan. According to Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), a total of 90 bird strikes occurred between January and September this year, compared to 83 incidents during the same period last year.

The report revealed that September 2025 alone saw 26 bird strike cases — a worrying increase. Lahore and Islamabad airports recorded the highest number of incidents, with 16 and 15 strikes respectively, while Karachi reported nine.

PIA officials stated that eight aircraft suffered damage, while 82 incidents were of minor nature. Most bird strikes occurred during landing and approach phases — 21 during landing and 14 during approach.

Data showed that A320 aircraft were the most affected, with 68 bird strike incidents reported. The growing number of bird strikes also disrupted private airline flight schedules, causing delays and technical inspections.

Officials noted that poor cleanliness and waste management around airports were the main reasons behind the increase. PIA’s safety department has recommended strengthening the bird control system to prevent further incidents.

Sources added that private airlines faced nearly double the number of bird strikes compared to PIA, with a total of around 180 cases reported.

The Pakistan Airports Authority stated that steps are being taken according to international standards to reduce bird hazards, but added that bird strikes are a global challenge linked to weather conditions, population growth, and environmental factors. The authority said it is coordinating with relevant departments to improve waste management and cleanliness around airports to enhance flight safety.
