Fans of Emma Stone took their love to a new level when they were asked to shave their heads to attend an early screening of her upcoming sci-fi comedy film Bugonia in Los Angeles. Only bald people were allowed inside the cinema, creating a unique and immersive movie experience.
The bold idea came from the film’s distributor, Focus Features, which challenged audiences to go bald in order to watch the film ahead of its official release. Bugonia, starring Emma Stone and directed by Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos, will hit select theaters this Friday and release nationwide in the U.S. on October 31.
Emma Stone and Lanthimos, known for their acclaimed films Poor Things and The Favourite, have built a strong fanbase. Their latest collaboration once again mixes dark humor with an unusual storyline.
In Bugonia, Stone plays Michelle Fuller, a powerful pharmaceutical CEO who is kidnapped by two conspiracy-driven cousins who believe she is an alien. As part of their plan, they shave her head this inspired the head-shaving rule for the screening.
To match the film’s theme, a barber was set up at the theater entrance. Many fans, including Sam Sherman from Los Angeles, willingly shaved their heads for a free movie and haircut. “I wanted to shave my head anyway this was the perfect excuse,” he said.
Another fan, 29-year-old Matthew Lopez, described the experience as deeply immersive. “It feels like I’m part of the story she shaved her head, I did it too,” he shared.
For 36-year-old Richard Chong, it was a fun way to support the director and make his family happy. “My friends and wife hate my bowl cut, so this is for them and because I love the director’s weird style,” he said.
With excitement building, Bugonia is already making headlines not only for its story but for turning fandom into a bold, unforgettable experience.
