A district and sessions court in Lahore granted post-arrest bail to podcast host Rehan Tariq on Tuesday, ending his weeks-long detention in a controversial blasphemy case.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Arshad Javed ordered Tariq’s release against surety bonds worth Rs100,000. The defense team successfully argued that the prosecution failed to produce concrete evidence linking Tariq’s online commentary to the specific legal threshold for blasphemy charges under the Pakistan Penal Code.

Tariq, known for hosting candid discussions on social and political issues, was arrested last month following a viral clip from one of his shows. The case triggered a polarized debate online, with legal experts and civil society groups raising alarms over the recurring use of Section 295-C to stifle digital discourse.

During the hearing, the prosecution maintained that the content of the podcast hurt religious sentiments. Tariq’s lawyer, however, contended that the remarks were taken out of context and that the host had issued a clarification shortly after the episode aired.

The court’s decision comes as a relief to digital rights advocates who have been tracking the case closely. Many observers view the arrest as part of a broader, tightening net around independent content creators in Pakistan.

Tariq remains under a court-imposed condition not to engage in content that could incite similar legal challenges during the trial. He is expected to be released from Camp Jail later this evening once the documentation is cleared.

Whether this ruling sets a precedent for other creators currently facing similar charges remains a point of intense speculation among legal circles in Lahore. For now, the case shifts from a matter of detention to a long-term trial in the lower courts.
