A local court on Wednesday granted interim bail to the primary suspect in the assault case involving Ali Jafri, providing a temporary reprieve as the investigation continues. The court set the bail amount at 50,000 rupees, ordering the suspect to cooperate fully with investigators until the next hearing.

The decision follows a high-profile complaint filed by Jafri, who alleged he was ambushed and physically attacked near his residence last week. Police reports indicate that the incident, captured on nearby CCTV footage, sparked public outcry and demands for a swift legal response.

While the suspect’s defense team argued that the charges were politically motivated and lacked corroborating evidence, the prosecution maintained that the medical reports and witness statements provided a strong basis for the initial FIR.

“We have presented the court with sufficient evidence to link the suspect to the scene,” a lead investigator told reporters outside the courtroom. “The bail is a procedural step, not an acquittal.”

The assault has reopened a broader conversation about the security of public figures and the rising frequency of targeted violence in the city. Jafri, known for his vocal stance on local governance issues, has expressed concerns over his safety since the attack, claiming that previous threats were ignored by law enforcement.

The court has directed the police to submit a comprehensive challan—a formal charge sheet—by the next hearing date, scheduled for later this month. Until then, the suspect remains under the court’s jurisdiction, with strict instructions to refrain from any contact with the complainant.

Whether this case moves to a formal trial or stalls due to procedural delays now rests on the strength of the evidence the police bring to the next hearing. For now, the legal battle moves into a quieter, more bureaucratic phase.
