Despite Rs 1.21 Billion Budget, Sindh Government Fails to Control Malaria Outbreak

Despite allocating Rs 1.21 billion for the anti-malaria program, the Sindh government has failed to curb the spread of the disease. Health experts have raised serious concerns over the poor quality of anti-malaria sprays being used.

According to reports, between January and April 2025, over 494,000 individuals were tested for malaria across the province, out of which 28,820 tested positive. The highest number of cases—10,562—was reported from Hyderabad Division, while only 239 cases were recorded in Karachi.

Although significant funds were provided to regions like Sukkur, Larkana, and Khairpur for mosquito control, timely and effective fumigation campaigns, especially in rural areas, were not carried out. Experts claim that substandard materials such as petrol fumes are being used instead of approved chemicals, and essential components like DDT have allegedly been excluded, violating WHO guidelines.

Citizens have expressed strong dissatisfaction with the poor planning and execution of the campaign, demanding immediate, scientific, and sustained fumigation efforts to prevent further spread of malaria.
