Floods and landslides in central Vietnam kill 55, leave 13 missing
At least 55 people have died and another 13 are missing after torrential rains triggered flooding and landslides across central Vietnam, according to the country’s disaster agency.
The agency reports that more than 235,000 homes were inundated and nearly 80,000 hectares of crops have been damaged in the firmly agriculture- and tourism-based region.
Some provinces recorded rainfall exceeding 1,900 mm (about 75 inches) over the course of the week, far above normal levels for the season. The hardest hit areas include Dok Lak province with 27 deaths and Khanh Hoa province with 14.
Economic losses are estimated at approximately 8.98 trillion dong (about US$445 million) from damage to infrastructure, homes and agriculture.
Rescue and recovery efforts are underway, though continued rainfall and unstable terrain remain major concerns for further landslides and flooding.
