A new study has revealed that eating more fruits can help reduce the harmful effects of air pollution on the lungs.
According to the University of Leicester, the reason for this protective effect could be the naturally occurring antioxidants found in fruits.
The research, conducted on more than 200,000 people, found that individuals who consumed more fruits daily particularly women experienced more noticeable protective effects.
Researchers noted that men generally ate fewer fruits than women, which may explain why women showed stronger protective benefits.
Commenting on the study, Sarah Sleet, Chief Executive of Asthma Lung UK, said:
“We already know that a diet rich in fruits improves lung function, but this study provides an interesting insight that fruits may also help counter the effects of air pollution.”
