‎A new study has revealed that eating more fruits can help reduce the harmful effects of air pollution on the lungs.

‎According to the University of Leicester, the reason for this protective effect could be the naturally occurring antioxidants found in fruits.

‎The research, conducted on more than 200,000 people, found that individuals who consumed more fruits daily particularly women experienced more noticeable protective effects.

‎Researchers noted that men generally ate fewer fruits than women, which may explain why women showed stronger protective benefits.

‎Commenting on the study, Sarah Sleet, Chief Executive of Asthma Lung UK, said:

‎“We already know that a diet rich in fruits improves lung function, but this study provides an interesting insight that fruits may also help counter the effects of air pollution.”
