ISLAMABAD, Oct 13: The Ministry of Federal Education has expressed hope that the Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC) will soon appoint a permanent Director General (DG) for the Federal Directorate of Education (FDE), which has been operating without a regular head since July 2023.
An education ministry official said the post had been sent to the FPSC for recruitment after the formulation of new appointment rules and clearance from all concerned authorities, in line with court directions. “The FPSC has been requested to take it up on priority,” the official added.
The position became vacant when former DG Dr. Ikram Ali Malik was removed by the ministry over alleged poor performance, though later reinstated by the Prime Minister as chairperson of the Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (FBISE). A subsequent petition in the Islamabad High Court delayed the appointment process, which has now been cleared.
Officials said the FDE, overseeing more than 430 public schools and colleges in Islamabad, has been run on an ad hoc basis for over a year due to administrative and legal hurdles.
Meanwhile, the FDE announced plans to launch six new BS programmes in various Islamabad colleges, including BS Information Technology, English, Statistics, Environmental Sciences, Islamic Studies, and Urdu, in affiliation with Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU).
QAU teams are expected to inspect the colleges this week before granting affiliation. However, some teachers alleged that FDE temporarily transferred faculty to meet QAU and HEC qualification criteria. An FDE official denied the claims, asserting that all formalities had been completed.
