Eight children have lost their lives after consuming a suspected toxic cough syrup produced by an Indian pharmaceutical company, causing panic and grief in their homes.
In the past, dozens of deaths have been reported in various countries due to cough syrups manufactured by Indian pharma companies. Now, once again, cough syrup produced by the same companies has claimed the lives of eight young children, sparking outrage in the affected areas.
According to Indian media, the shocking incidents of sudden child deaths occurred in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. The tragic events have left parents and local residents deeply angered. Following the incidents, state governments have banned the distribution of the suspected cough syrups and ordered investigations.
Reports indicate that in Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh, six children suddenly died due to kidney failure, which is allegedly linked to the consumption of cough syrup supplied by government hospitals.
Similarly, in Rajasthan, the tragic deaths of children aged three and five are also reportedly connected to the consumption of cough syrup provided by state-run hospitals. All these incidents occurred within the past fifteen days.
After the children’s deaths, the state governments have banned the distribution of cough syrups named “Cold Relief” and “Nextro DSU” in hospitals and among patients. These syrups allegedly contained toxic diethylene glycol. The National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) is currently investigating the matter.
District Chief Medical Officer Dr. Manish Sharma has advised the public not to administer any medicine to their children without consulting a doctor in case of fever or illness.
Meanwhile, a media report claimed that the cough syrups linked to the children’s deaths had already been banned and blacklisted. However, they were still being freely distributed under the “Chief Minister Free Medicine Scheme” in government hospitals across Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.
