Emma Stone’s sci-fi thriller Bugonia has officially broken into the year’s top 75 highest-grossing films worldwide, surpassing Universal’s recently released sports-horror title, which has struggled to gain traction at the box office.
According to industry estimates, Bugonia gained momentum through strong overseas performance and steady weekend holdovers, allowing it to climb ahead of bigger studio-backed competition. The film’s sharp social commentary and Stone’s widely praised performance have been credited for driving positive word-of-mouth.
Universal’s sports-horror film, in contrast, opened to muted numbers and failed to recover in subsequent weeks, slipping further down the rankings as audience interest declined. Analysts note that the studio’s marketing push could not overcome weak reception and genre fatigue.
With Bugonia continuing to expand into new territories, box office observers say the film may rise even higher in the global chart, solidifying its status as one of the year’s unexpected winners.
