The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Friday imposed a fine on Pakistan’s star batter Fakhar Zaman, deducting 10 percent of his match fee for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the Tri-Series final against Sri Lanka.
The offence falls under Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which pertains to showing dissent at an umpire’s decision. Alongside the financial sanction, the left-hander has also received one demerit point — his first in a 24-month period.
“Zaman was found to have breached Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, relating to showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an international match,” the ICC stated in its release.
The incident took place in the 19th over of Pakistan’s chase when Fakhar, who had scored three runs, was seen verbally disputing his dismissal with the on-field officials.
Reon King of the ICC International Panel of Match Referees proposed the sanction, while umpires Ahsan Raza, Asif Yaqoob, Rashid Riaz and Faisal Afridi formally levelled the charge.
The 35-year-old admitted to the offence and accepted the punishment, eliminating the need for a formal hearing.
Pakistan won the final comfortably, defeating Sri Lanka by six wickets.
Mohammad Nawaz and Shaheen Afridi were the chief destroyers with the ball, claiming three wickets apiece to dismiss Sri Lanka for just 114 in 19.1 overs.
In response, Pakistan chased down the target in 18.4 overs, led by Babar Azam’s unbeaten 37 and Saim Ayub’s fluent 36.
