Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) teams have apprehended several senior NADRA officials following a probe into the illegal issuance of national identity cards to Afghan citizens. The arrests, centered in Karachi and Islamabad, mark a significant escalation in the government’s crackdown on systemic corruption within the national database.

Investigators allege the suspects bypassed security protocols by manipulating biometric data and falsifying family trees. By embedding Afghan nationals into the records of local families, the network enabled individuals to obtain Pakistani passports and travel documents under fraudulent pretenses.

For the FIA, this isn’t just about administrative fraud. Officials view these breaches as a severe national security risk, particularly regarding the monitoring of undocumented foreign residents. The investigation revealed that the suspects allegedly charged hefty bribes—ranging from hundreds of thousands of rupees per document—to facilitate the process.

“The integrity of our national database is non-negotiable,” a senior FIA investigator said on condition of anonymity. “We aren’t just looking at a few rogue employees; we are uncovering a deliberate, multi-layered scheme that has operated for years.”

Internal audits at NADRA reportedly flagged suspicious activity months ago, but the scale of the operation only became clear during recent forensic data analysis. The agency has since suspended dozens of other employees who may have been connected to the network, pending further interrogation.

This isn’t the first time NADRA’s security has been questioned. Critics have long argued that the authority’s reliance on local agents and third-party contractors creates loopholes that are easily exploited. While NADRA has introduced new biometric requirements and decentralized verification processes, the ability of these officials to override system alerts suggests the problem runs deeper than simple human error.

As the FIA broadens its net, the pressure is mounting on the Ministry of Interior to overhaul the entire verification chain. With the suspects currently in custody, the agency expects to make further arrests in the coming days as they trace the money trail linked to these fraudulent documents.

For now, the focus remains on identifying exactly how many fake identity cards were issued—and where those individuals are currently located.
