Filmistan Studios, one of Bollywood’s oldest and most iconic film studios, co-founded in 1943 by Sashadhar Mukherjee grandfather of Kajol and Rani Mukerji has been sold to Arkade Developers for ₹183 crore. The studio, located in Goregaon West, Mumbai, is set to be replaced by a ₹3,000 crore real estate project featuring two 50-storey luxury towers.
Over the decades, Filmistan served not only as a film set but also as a production hub, employing artists and technicians full-time. It played a vital role in shaping Indian cinema’s golden era.
The decision has sparked criticism from the All Indian Cine Workers Association, which called the sale a “loss of cultural heritage” and urged Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis to intervene. The protest highlights the growing concern that artistic legacy is being replaced by commercial interests.
Meanwhile, Kajol continues her work in Indian cinema, with her recent film Maa resonating emotionally as the fight to protect her family’s legacy echoes on.
