Islamabad, September 10, 2025 — India has released additional water into the Sutlej River, raising flood concerns in Pakistan. The Indian High Commission has issued a high-flow alert to Islamabad, prompting Pakistan’s Ministry of Water Resources to warn provincial authorities.

The released water is flowing downstream from Harike and Ferozepur barrages, increasing the river’s discharge across southern Punjab and Sindh. Flow measurements show 279,908 cusecs at Trimu Barrage, 475,129 cusecs at Punchnad Headworks, and 502,844 cusecs at Guddu Barrage. Water levels in the Indus and Sutlej are continuing to rise, according to Sindh’s Information Department.

Pakistani authorities have declared an emergency in flood-prone areas and accelerated relief operations. Local administrations are relocating residents to safer locations using boats and other resources.

Experts warn that India’s water release could escalate water disputes between the two countries. Pakistan has called for greater transparency and cooperation on water management.

The situation underscores the sensitivity of transboundary water issues and highlights the need for international attention to support a cooperative resolution.
