Germany has introduced major changes to its visa process for Pakistani applicants, shifting key categories to a fully digital application system aimed at speeding up processing and reducing long waiting times.

Under the updated system, long-term visa applicants—including those applying for student, work, and job-seeker visas—must now apply through a Consular Services Portal, launched by the German Embassy and Consulate. The move is part of Germany’s broader effort to modernise immigration procedures and attract skilled workers.

Digital shift in visa applications

Officials said the new online system allows applicants to:

Submit forms and upload documents digitally
Receive preliminary document checks before appointments
Track application status online

The system is expected to reduce delays and eliminate long waiting lists, which had been a major concern for Pakistani applicants in recent years.

Focus on skilled workers and students

Germany is actively seeking foreign talent to address labour shortages and has set a target to issue around 200,000 skilled-worker visas annually, including to applicants from Pakistan.

At the same time, authorities confirmed that the process for short-term Schengen visas remains largely unchanged, with applicants still required to book appointments and submit biometrics.

Background

The changes follow earlier disruptions in visa services in Pakistan, including a temporary suspension of operations in Karachi, which was later lifted with services resuming normally.

Key takeaway

Officials say the new system is designed to make the visa process:

Faster
More transparent
Easier to manage for applicants

However, applicants are still required to provide complete documentation and meet eligibility criteria, as incomplete or incorrect applications may lead to delays or rejection.
