Researchers have developed an artificial intelligence model that can identify potential cases of high blood pressure using data collected from smartwatch sensors.
According to a study involving 196 participants, the Google-developed model detected 65.8% of hypertension cases by analysing pulse signals and movement data recorded through smartwatch technology.
How Does the Technology Work?
The model examines information gathered through smartwatch pulse and motion sensors. It uses patterns in these signals to identify indicators that may be associated with high blood pressure.
Unlike traditional blood pressure monitoring, which generally requires a dedicated blood pressure device, this approach explores whether commonly available wearable technology could help identify people at risk.
Potential Benefits for Healthcare
If further research confirms its accuracy, the technology could make it easier to identify people who may have hypertension, including those who do not regularly monitor their blood pressure.
Early identification could encourage people to seek medical assessment and receive appropriate treatment before complications develop.
Further Research Needed
Although the findings are promising, the model is not a replacement for conventional blood pressure monitoring or medical diagnosis. Further studies involving larger and more diverse populations will be needed to establish its reliability in everyday use.
