An anti-terrorism court in Karachi extended the interim bail of Tanveer Pasha and other suspects on Tuesday, pushing the hearing for the Gul Plaza fire case into next month.

The court’s decision grants the accused more time to prepare their defense as the investigation into the blaze—which gutted the prominent shopping center—continues to crawl through the judicial process.

The fire, which broke out in the heart of Karachi’s busiest commercial district, caused millions in damages and exposed deep-seated failures in building safety standards. Investigators have focused on whether the structural modifications made to the plaza violated local fire codes, a contention that remains the pivot point of the legal battle.

Tanveer Pasha and his co-accused have consistently denied any criminal negligence, arguing that the fire was an unfortunate accident rather than a result of illicit building practices. Their legal team maintained in court today that they have fully cooperated with the ongoing investigation, citing this as grounds for the continued extension of their bail.

The prosecution, however, has faced criticism for the pace of the proceedings. Retailers and shop owners who lost their livelihoods in the inferno have grown increasingly impatient, frequently citing the lack of accountability for the safety lapses that left their businesses vulnerable.

With the bail extended until the next hearing, the court has directed the investigation officer to submit a more comprehensive report regarding the forensic evidence collected from the site.

Until that report is filed, the legal status of the accused remains in limbo, leaving the victims waiting for a resolution that seems no closer than it was when the smoke first cleared.
