Heavy Rain Batters Alipurduar: Bridge Collapses, Trees and Electric Poles Uprooted

Torrential rain has caused severe damage in Alipurduar district of North Bengal, where a small bridge collapsed amid continuous downpour and strong winds. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), rainfall is expected to continue until Monday morning, raising concerns over more structural damage and flooding in low-lying areas.

The heavy rain, accompanied by gusty winds, uprooted several trees and electric poles, disrupting traffic and electricity in parts of the district. Local residents reported that the bridge, connecting two villages near Alipurduar town, gave way after hours of relentless rainfall, cutting off road access and isolating nearby communities.

Disaster management teams and local administration officials rushed to the spot to assess the damage and begin restoration work. No casualties have been reported so far, but authorities have warned residents to stay away from weakened structures and flooded zones.

The IMD said the rainfall is linked to a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, which continues to drive moisture toward eastern India. Weather experts predict gradual improvement from Monday afternoon, though intermittent rain is likely to persist for another 24 to 48 hours.
