The iconic town of Jasper is emptying out. Fire officials issued a mandatory evacuation order late Monday as an out-of-control wildfire breached the park boundaries, forcing thousands of residents and tourists to abandon their belongings and head for safety.

Highway 16—the primary artery out of the region—is gridlocked. Local authorities confirmed that the blaze, fueled by extreme heat and erratic winds, moved faster than initial containment models predicted. By midnight, emergency crews shifted from aggressive suppression to defensive triage, focusing entirely on protecting critical infrastructure and evacuation routes.

“We are beyond the point of standard containment,” a Parks Canada official told local media shortly after the order was issued. “The priority now is life safety. Get out. Don’t stop to pack non-essentials.”

The fire, which ignited in the backcountry late last week, surged toward the townsite after shifting winds pushed embers across firebreaks. With Jasper National Park currently experiencing record-dry conditions, vegetation is acting as a catalyst for rapid fire spread.

For the residents, the panic is visceral. Many who stayed behind to monitor the situation earlier in the day were caught off guard by the sudden intensity of the smoke plumes. Fuel stations in the town have already run dry, and cell service is becoming increasingly intermittent, leaving those on the road struggling to coordinate with family members.

The evacuation marks one of the most significant threats to the Jasper townsite in decades. While provincial fire crews from Alberta and British Columbia are mobilizing, the sheer scale of the fire front means that reinforcements will take hours, if not days, to establish a meaningful perimeter.

For now, the town is effectively a ghost ship. The only movement belongs to the emergency vehicles pushing against the tide of traffic, heading toward a fire that shows no sign of slowing down.
