KARACHI: District South Police arrested five alleged members of the notorious ‘Corolla Gang’ after a brief but intense armed encounter in DHA Phase 7, officials said on Tuesday.
According to police, the suspects — who had reportedly arrived in Karachi from Punjab two days earlier — attempted to flee and opened indiscriminate fire on law enforcement personnel during the confrontation. However, police teams, employing a coordinated strategy, managed to apprehend all five suspects without any loss of life.
The arrested individuals were identified as Irfan, Bilal, Abid, Shahid, and Waqas. Law enforcement officials stated that the group was involved in snatching mobile phones and committing robberies in crowded locations such as the airport, railway stations, bus terminals, and other busy public areas.
Police recovered weapons, mobile phones, a laptop, and the white Toyota Corolla allegedly used in the crimes. Investigators added that the gang would change the IMEI numbers of snatched mobile phones before selling them in the local market.
Authorities revealed that the suspects were already wanted in multiple cases registered in various cities of Punjab. Several CCTV videos of their criminal activities have also surfaced following their arrest.
SSP South praised the police team’s timely action, reiterating that Karachi has no space for criminal elements. Further investigation is underway, with officials expecting to trace additional accomplices and facilitators linked to the gang.
