Karachi, May 22:
The University of Karachi (KU) observed International Biodiversity Day 2025 on Thursday at the Professor Dr S. I. Ali Botanic Garden and Herbarium, in collaboration with the Department of Botany and the Pakistan Botanical Society. This year’s theme was “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development.”

Former KU Vice Chancellor and noted botanist Prof. Dr Muhammad Qaiser urged immediate efforts to protect biodiversity, warning that human activities and overpopulation are putting immense pressure on natural resources. He emphasized afforestation with native species to combat climate change and water scarcity.

KU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi highlighted the need for green urban planning, pointing out Karachi’s transformation into a “concrete jungle.” He called for bold steps to ensure environmental sustainability and warned against the consequences of unchecked urbanization, deforestation, and habitat fragmentation.

The event included a plantation drive, organic gardening, seed germination demos, and nature-based activities, engaging students from schools, colleges, and universities across the city.

Over 400 plant varieties, including medicinal herbs, vegetables, fruits, and ornamental plants, were showcased. Visitors also explored innovative environmental solutions presented through stalls and project displays.
