In a surprising blow to Quetta Gladiators, Sri Lankan wicketkeeper-batter Kusal Mendis has officially withdrawn from the remaining matches of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025 and opted to participate in the Indian Premier League (IPL) instead.
Sources close to the development confirm that Mendis informed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) earlier this week, citing “personal priorities and more lucrative opportunities” as key reasons for the shift.
The move comes just days before the PSL is set to resume on May 17, following a mid-season suspension. Mendis’ absence is expected to significantly weaken Quetta’s batting order ahead of crucial matches in the race to the playoffs.
“This is a major setback. Kusal was one of our most reliable middle-order options,” said a franchise representative who requested anonymity.
The news sparked backlash on social media, with PSL fans expressing disappointment and raising questions about foreign players’ commitment to the league.
Meanwhile, the PCB has yet to issue an official comment regarding player replacements or penalties.
