Report By Ayesha Masood (Karachi) A serious shortage of basic facilities has surfaced at the major public hospital, Civil Hospital, where patients are forced to sit on the floor due to the lack of proper chairs or seating. In the overcrowded waiting area, numerous patients either have no choice but to sit on the ground or wait outside in the scorching sun and heat.
According to reports, hundreds of patients visit the OPD daily for treatment, but the limited space and lack of amenities mean many endure significant hardship and discomfort. At Civil Hospital, not only is there a shortage of chairs, but many doctors are absent or arrive late.
This grim reality is nothing short of a tragedy: on one hand, the government claims to be improving healthcare, while on the other, citizens are deprived of even basic facilities. A hospital, which should be a place of hope for patients, has instead become a symbol of suffering and helplessness. When underprivileged people turn to govt hospitals for treatment, they deserve at least humane treatment.
Finally, the government should recognize that the poor rely on govt hospitals and should accordingly ensure they receive appropriate facilities. Unfortunately, in our country, the poor are often subjected to inhumane treatment, and sadly, their dignity is measured by their wealth. Even hospital doctors are rude or neglectful toward them. The government must improve healthcare standards and provide equal services to all—or at least restore conditions in public hospitals and prioritize the people.
