Lahore Court Remands Mother Accused in Killing of Three Children

A Lahore court on Friday handed over a woman accused of killing her three young children to police on a five-day physical remand, as investigators continued probing the case that has shocked the city.

The suspect, identified in local reports as Rida Fatima, was produced before a judicial magistrate at Model Town Courts after police sought extended custody for further interrogation, medical examination, and other investigative procedures.

The case surfaced on April 23, when police and rescue officials responded to reports of three children found dead inside a residence in Lahore’s Shah Jamal/Ichhra area. The children were identified in local reports as five-year-old Momina Batool, four-year-old Momin Raza, and their youngest sibling, a girl aged around one-and-a-half years. Reports from the scene said the children had suffered fatal throat injuries, and their bodies were shifted for post-mortem examination.

Police have said their initial investigation points toward the children’s mother, and multiple outlets reported that she allegedly confessed during questioning. Authorities have linked the suspected motive, at this stage, to serious domestic conflict. Dawn reported that police cited strained relations between the couple, while Geo reported that the suspect initially blamed her in-laws and later referred to disputes regarding the children’s legitimacy. These claims remain part of the ongoing investigation and have not been proven in court.

Geo also reported a developing line of inquiry suggesting police are examining the suspect’s alleged contact with a man in Jhang, including phone records, WhatsApp communication, and financial transactions. Investigators suspect she may have been considering separation from her husband, though officials have stressed that these findings are still under investigation. Forensic reports are still awaited.

In court on April 25, the magistrate granted police five days’ custody instead of the 14 days requested and directed investigators to produce the suspect again on April 29. Police told the court they required physical remand for further investigation, including polygraph and medical tests.

The case has drawn widespread attention in Punjab, with Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz expressing grief and seeking a detailed report on the incident. For now, key questions—especially regarding motive—remain under investigation, and the final conclusions will depend on forensic evidence and court proceedings
