The hardline Indian government has imposed a ban on giving Azaan (Islamic call to prayer) through loudspeakers in Mumbai.

According to Indian media, Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti stated that loudspeakers have been removed from religious sites across the city, making Mumbai “free of loudspeakers.”

“We have removed nearly 1,500 loudspeakers from religious places across the city,” said Bharti. He further added that police will ensure that such loudspeakers are not reinstalled in the future.

This move is being seen by many as part of the ongoing campaign by India’s ruling party, often accused of targeting religious minorities under the guise of maintaining law and order.
