KARACHI: Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has announced that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has started rehabilitation of 106 rain damaged roads across the city, promising completion within the next 60 days.
During a late-night inspection in areas including Korangi, Wahab said the project aims to restore streets affected by recent rains and urban flooding, ensuring smoother mobility for citizens. He revealed that around 170,000 square feet of road is currently under construction.
Highlighting past efforts, the mayor noted that KMC had already rebuilt key routes such as Malir Kala Board and Khokhrapar roads, along with several inner streets. He, however, criticized local town administrations for allowing gas line installations that left roads damaged despite charging restoration fees.
“KMC teams are now working overnight so citizens wake up to newly built streets,” Wahab said, stressing that the corporation is “going beyond its mandate” to serve residents. He also announced that Rs28 billion will be spent this year on development projects directly benefiting Karachi.
Calling for greater federal attention, Wahab urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to stay in Karachi for several days and announce a dedicated budget for the city. He further disclosed that billions have been allocated for Model Colony Town, where sewerage work is set to begin next week.
“Karachi is not a colony to be managed from Islamabad,” the mayor asserted, adding that local leadership remains directly answerable to the people.
