Measles is once again spreading rapidly across the world. There are concerns that an outbreak may occur in 2026 even in countries such as the United States and Mexico, which previously held measles-free status, increasing global alarm.
According to experts, collective immunity among humans has weakened, allowing this highly contagious virus to resurface.
After Covid-19, routine childhood vaccination has been disrupted in many countries. Due to pressure on hospitals and lockdowns, millions of children missed the MMR vaccine for measles, mumps, and rubella.
In Spartanburg County of the US state of South Carolina, more than 550 measles cases have been reported since the beginning of 2026, leading to school closures and alerts issued to hospitals.
Canada lost its measles free status in 2025, while thousands of cases have also been reported in Pakistan, India, Indonesia, and Yemen.
Experts have warned that measles is not limited to fever and rashes alone. The disease severely damages the immune system, making children more vulnerable to other illnesses for several years.
Symptoms of Measles:
Symptoms include cold, cough, runny nose, and eye inflammation in the early stages. After a few days, white spots appear inside the mouth, followed by a rash that starts on the face and spreads across the body.
Protection and Precautions Before Travel:
The two dose MMR vaccine provides lifelong protection. It is essential to complete vaccination at least two weeks before traveling abroad. After returning from affected areas, symptoms should be monitored for 21 days.
Experts say that the fight against measles is not just an individual responsibility but a collective one. Timely vaccination remains the only effective way to prevent this dangerous disease.
