Argentine legend Lionel Messi netted twice to guide Inter Miami to a 3-1 triumph over Nashville SC in the opening clash of their MLS Cup Round One playoff series.
Tadeo Allende was also on target for Miami, who now lead 1-0 in the best-of-three series, with the second game set to take place in Nashville on November 1.
Before kickoff, Messi — an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner — received the Golden Boot award for finishing as the league’s top scorer with 29 goals in 28 appearances.
The 37-year-old wasted little time showcasing his brilliance, heading home a 19th-minute opener from a Luis Suárez cross. The move began when Sergio Busquets won possession near the sideline and passed to Rodrigo De Paul, who linked up beautifully with Messi and Suárez before the captain finished.
Miami doubled their lead in the 62nd minute when Allende nodded in Ian Fray’s precise delivery.
“We know the playoffs are always difficult, so it was important to start strong at home,” De Paul said. “The team was focused, disciplined, and smart about when to attack and defend. We’re improving with every match, and that’s key.”
Messi sealed the win deep into stoppage time — nine minutes into the second-half injury period — capitalizing on a rebound after Nashville goalkeeper Joe Willis failed to collect Jordi Alba’s cross from the left flank.
Although Hany Mukhtar pulled one back for Nashville in the 11th minute of added time, it was little more than consolation.
MLS Commissioner Don Garber, who presented Messi with his Golden Boot, praised the Argentine’s impact on the league:
“I don’t think anyone could have imagined the influence Leo would have — not just on Miami, but on MLS as a whole. He’s changed the league’s direction, and having him for three more years is a true gift.”
De Paul expressed his joy at sharing the pitch with Messi, saying:
“It’s a huge advantage to have him with us every week. We just need to keep enjoying him. I’m thrilled he’s renewed — it means we’ll stay together a bit longer.”
Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano warned his side against complacency, despite back-to-back wins over Nashville, including a 5-2 rout in their regular-season finale.
“Nashville’s playing style can always be dangerous,” Mascherano said. “We made some good adjustments tonight, but we still have to keep improving.”
