New Delhi, August 13 — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi may visit the United States next month for the UN General Assembly session, with a possible sideline meeting with US President Donald Trump to address worsening trade tensions, The Indian Express reported.
India’s foreign ministry has not confirmed Modi’s participation. An official said the provisional speakers’ list for the UNGA General Debate on September 26 includes India’s head of government but may change. The main debate runs from September 23–29.
The potential meeting comes shortly after Trump slapped an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods — raising the total levy to 50% — in retaliation for New Delhi’s continued purchase of Russian oil.
Trade negotiations between the two countries collapsed after five rounds over disputes about opening India’s farm and dairy sectors and halting Russian oil imports.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said major trade deals, including with India, are still pending, but expressed hope they could be finalised by late October.
