Namibia Secures Spot in 2026 ICC T20 World Cup with Win Over Tanzania

Namibia has once again stamped its authority on African cricket, sealing qualification for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 after a convincing victory over Tanzania in the regional qualifiers held in Harare.

The Eagles, as they’re fondly known, cruised into their fourth consecutive World Cup thanks to an all-round masterclass from JJ Smit. Coming in at a crucial stage, Smit smashed an unbeaten 61 runs off just 34 deliveries, propelling Namibia to a strong total of 174 for 6. He didn’t stop there — with the ball in hand, he picked up three wickets, dismantling Tanzania’s batting order and restricting them to 111 for 8.

Captain Gerhard Erasmus praised his side’s resilience, saying the team had worked hard to maintain consistency on the big stage. “Qualifying four times in a row is no small achievement. It shows how far Namibian cricket has come and how serious we are about competing with the best,” Erasmus noted after the match.

For Tanzania, the defeat was a bitter pill, but the side has been earning respect for its steady rise in African cricket. Despite showing flashes of potential with the ball early in the game, they couldn’t contain Namibia’s firepower in the middle overs.

The 2026 T20 World Cup, set to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, will feature an expanded format with 20 teams battling it out across multiple venues. With Namibia securing their place, attention now turns to who else will grab the remaining qualifying spots from the African region.

This qualification continues Namibia’s impressive streak, following appearances at the 2021, 2022, and 2024 editions of the tournament. For a nation with limited cricketing infrastructure, the achievement highlights both the determination of its players and the growing support for the sport at home.
