Ambassador reaffirms that Islamabad stood in resolute solidarity with Iranian govt and its people
Pakistan has strongly denounced Isr@el’s recent strikes on Iranian nuclear and military facilities, calling them “unjustified and illegitimate,” and warning of their grave implications for regional and global stability.
Speaking at an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) convened on Friday, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, urged the 15-member Council to act decisively in upholding international law and halting further aggression.
“These strikes represent a grave danger and a serious threat to peace, security, and stability across the entire region and beyond,” Ambassador Asim said.
The UNSC cleared its scheduled agenda to focus on the escalating tensions following Israel’s aerial assaults on Iranian infrastructure. The session was requested by Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, who stated that Israel had “crossed every red line” and that the global community must ensure accountability.
Pakistan stood in solidarity with Iran, joining China and Russia in backing the call for the emergency meeting. Ambassador Asim emphasized Pakistan’s firm stance, advocating for dialogue and diplomacy as the only viable path forward.
“We call upon all parties to exercise maximum restraint and to avoid actions that could trigger a wider conflict,” Asim stressed, urging the Council to “step up to its responsibility.”
UN Warns of Nuclear Safety Risks
Rosemary DiCarlo, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, echoed concerns over the regional fallout. She warned that the situation was deteriorating rapidly and that the repercussions of the strikes were already being felt.
“We must avoid a descent into deeper and wider regional conflict at all costs,” DiCarlo said, emphasizing that military escalation threatens to derail recent diplomatic openings, including planned US-Iran talks in Oman—talks that are now reportedly suspended.
She underscored the need for a peaceful resolution, highlighting the importance of returning to the negotiating table to address concerns surrounding Iran’s nuclear program.
IAEA Chief Calls for Nuclear Site Protection
Addressing the Council, Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), issued a stark warning against targeting nuclear facilities.
“Such attacks have serious implications for nuclear security, safety, and non-proliferation,” Grossi said, calling for immediate assessments and vowing to travel to the region to support safety and de-escalation efforts.
He offered the IAEA as a neutral platform to facilitate dialogue, emphasizing that “technical engagement must prevail over political escalation.”
“Only through cooperation, transparency, and dialogue can we prevent this crisis from spiraling out of control,” Grossi concluded.
