Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday announced a relief package for flood victims, waiving electricity bills for the month of August in all flood-affected areas.
Addressing the nation on state TV, PM Shehbaz said Pakistan has witnessed massive destruction due to recent rains and floods, resulting in loss of lives, homes, livestock, and livelihoods.
He emphasised that both federal and provincial governments, along with the armed forces and citizens, are working together to provide rescue, food, and healthcare services to those in need.
Shehbaz Sharif announced that all domestic consumers in flood-hit areas will not have to pay their August electricity bills. Those who have already paid will receive refunds adjusted in the upcoming month’s bills.
“This is not a favour but the right of the flood victims,” the PM stated. He added that the federal government will cover these costs from its own resources.
PM Shehbaz also directed authorities to assess losses faced by agricultural, commercial, and industrial electricity consumers in flood-affected regions. Until the assessment is complete, the collection of their August bills has been postponed.
He assured that if losses are found to be substantial, the government will introduce further measures to extend relief.
Immediate orders have been issued to power distribution companies to ensure smooth implementation of the decision.
Mr Sharif acknowledged the suffering of families left homeless by the disaster, pledging that the government will continue efforts for their complete rehabilitation.
Reiterating his resolve, the Prime Minister said: “We will not rest until every flood-affected person is rehabilitated in their home. This is a humble effort from your servant Pakistan, to ease your hardships.”
