The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Thursday cautioned that the eastern parts of Punjab such as Lahore, Gujranwala, Sheikhupura, Kasur, Faisalabad, Multan, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan and others may experience escalating smog levels in the coming days.
According to the PMD, stable and dry weather patterns including calm winds, cooler temperatures and lingering humidity are preventing dispersal of pollutants. This fosters the build-up of thick smog layers in the region.
The department noted that smog defined as a combination of smoke and fog—is usually most prevalent from November through mid-December. However, the current conducive meteorological conditions could accelerate its arrival in major cities.
The PMD warned of serious health and safety risks, including spikes in respiratory illnesses, asthma attacks, reduced visibility on highways and disruptions to outdoor activity especially affecting children, the elderly and people with existing lung or heart conditions.
