Despite continued efforts to eradicate polio in the country, the presence of the polio virus has once again been detected in environmental samples from various districts.
Analysis of sewage samples collected from different districts across the country in May 2026 confirmed the presence of the polio virus in certain districts of Sindh, Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
According to the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC), sewage samples from Kashmore, Qambar, Karachi East, and Karachi West in Sindh tested positive for the polio virus.
In Balochistan, the virus was also detected in environmental samples collected from Dera Bugti and Chaman.
Similarly, the presence of the polio virus was confirmed in sewage samples from Peshawar and Bannu in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
On the other hand, all environmental samples collected from Punjab, Azad Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, and Islamabad tested negative for the polio virus.
