Pope Leo XIV met with members of the Italian Conference of Major Superiors (CISM) at the Vatican on Friday, November 7, encouraging them to embrace synodal principles in governance to prevent “stagnation” and inspire hope within their communities.

Addressing the 65th General Assembly themed “Governing Hope: Forms and Styles of Governance in the Provinces of a Synodal Church,” the Pope emphasized the need for “ecclesial discernment, transparent decision-making, and accountability.” He urged religious leaders to promote open discussion, fraternal correction, and rotation of responsibilities to avoid rigidity.

Highlighting the growing intercultural nature of consecrated life, Pope Leo said these communities must remain dynamic and adaptable, “like a living organism” requiring constant renewal. He reminded them that the ministry of authority should “inspire hope and support the mission” of their brothers and sisters.

Quoting St. Augustine, the Pope concluded by underlining the shared responsibility of seeking God together, saying this reflects the true “synodal dimension” of religious life.
