Cristiano Ronaldo is at risk of missing Portugal’s opening match at next year’s World Cup after receiving the first red card of his international career in a 2–0 defeat to the Republic of Ireland on Thursday.
Ronaldo was initially shown a yellow card after making contact with defender Dara O’Shea, but the referee upgraded it to a straight red after reviewing the replay on a pitch-side monitor. The incident occurred during the first half in Dublin and has sparked major concern for Portugal ahead of the World Cup.
Portugal coach Roberto Martinez defended his captain, saying the slow-motion angle made the action appear more severe than it actually was. “It looks worse on camera,” Martinez said. “It wasn’t an intentional elbow — more of a natural movement. But the angle suggested otherwise. We respect the decision.”
Ronaldo will automatically miss Portugal’s upcoming fixture against Armenia due to the one-match suspension. Portugal currently lead Group F by two points and could secure World Cup qualification with a win.
However, FIFA’s disciplinary code could extend his ban. A minimum two-match suspension applies for serious foul play, while violent conduct — including elbowing — can result in at least a three-match ban or more. Importantly, pre-World Cup friendly matches do not count toward serving the suspension.
This means Ronaldo could potentially miss Portugal’s opening game — or more — at the 2026 World Cup, depending on FIFA’s final verdict, which may take up to three weeks.
The red card is the first in Ronaldo’s record 226 appearances for Portugal, adding further sensitivity to the situation. Despite the setback, the 39-year-old remains focused on qualifying for what would be his sixth World Cup appearance.
