Karachi’s commercial heartbeat is set to stall tomorrow as the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) protest movement against the latest petroleum levy hike reaches the city’s major trade hubs. Traders in Saddar, alongside the city’s sprawling mobile and electronics markets, have announced a complete shutdown in solidarity with the party’s call for a nationwide strike.

The decision follows days of mounting pressure on small business owners already reeling from record-high electricity bills and soaring operational costs. For the retailers in the Regale Chowk and Star City Mall areas, the levy—which pushed petrol prices to levels that have decimated consumer footfall—is the final straw.

“We can’t survive on daily losses,” said a representative for the Saddar Electronics Dealers Association. He noted that while the group is often reluctant to halt trade, the current tax trajectory leaves “zero room for profit.”

JI Karachi chief Munem Zafar has framed the strike as a “referendum against economic oppression.” The party’s leadership has been aggressively campaigning across the city, urging transporters, traders, and the general public to keep their shutters down. They are demanding an immediate rollback of the petroleum levy and a reduction in electricity tariffs.

The closure carries significant weight for Karachi’s economy. Saddar serves as the primary distribution point for electronics imported into the city; a day of inactivity there triggers a ripple effect that slows down retail supply chains across Sindh.

Police and local administration are bracing for potential disruptions. While the JI leadership insists the protest will remain peaceful, the heavy deployment of law enforcement in the city center suggests authorities are concerned about blockades at key intersections.

For the average commuter, the strike signals a day of gridlock and uncertainty. Public transport operators have largely aligned with the strike, meaning those who do venture out will likely find few options for travel.

As the government remains firm on its revenue targets—citing IMF conditions for the recent tax hikes—the standoff between street agitation and fiscal policy shows no sign of cooling. By tomorrow evening, the city will have a clearer answer on whether this show of force is enough to rattle Islamabad’s resolve.
