Hundreds of people in Sindh have recently fallen ill with various stomach diseases due to extreme heat, negligence in preserving meat, careless consumption of meat and the use of unsafe drinking water, with a large number seeking treatment in hospital emergency wards.
According to sources in the Health Department, senior doctors associated with two major government hospitals in Karachi reported an unusual increase in the number of gastroenteritis patients over the past four days.
Doctors stated that the medical history of patients showed that the affected individuals had either consumed spoiled meat or eaten excessive quantities of meat.
Dr. Imran Sarwar Sheikh, Additional Medical Superintendent and Head of the Emergency Department at Dr. Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi, said that an increase in gastroenteritis patients is observed every year during Eid-ul-Adha.
Dr. Imran Sarwar Sheikh further said that meat becomes available in abundance after Eid-ul-Adha and people often fail to take necessary precautionary measures.
