Sindh Government Considers 6,850 New Prison Posts to Tackle Overcrowding and Security Challenges

KARACHI: The Sindh government is considering the creation of 6,850 new posts in the province’s prison system to address rising security and administrative challenges due to severe overcrowding and staff shortages.

The proposal was discussed in a key meeting held under the chairmanship of Inspector General Sindh Prisons and Correction Service, Fida Hussain Mistooi. The meeting was held in light of the public safety vision of Sindh Minister for Works, Services, and Prisons, Ali Hassan Zardari.

Officials shared that Sindh’s prisons are currently operating at 185% over their capacity, housing high-profile criminals, extremists, and foreign prisoners. The current approved security staff is insufficient, resulting in growing administrative and safety concerns.

The meeting also highlighted the urgent need for staff deployment at two upcoming facilities — the District Prison and Correctional Facility in Thatta and the Special Prison for Women and Youthful Offenders School in Mirpurkhas. Security upgrades are also required at regional offices, the Inspectorate, and the Hyderabad Training Institute.

“An increase in manpower is essential for secure inmate custody, stronger prison security, and modern management systems,” said IG Fida Hussain.

A formal proposal for the creation of 6,850 new posts has been sent to Minister Ali Hassan Zardari and Additional Chief Secretary Home, Iqbal Memon, for approval. Once cleared, the move will be implemented on an urgent basis.
