Sindh Imposes Province Wide Ban on Polythene Bags from June 15 to Combat Plastic Pollution

KARACHI: In a decisive step toward environmental preservation, the Sindh cabinet has approved a complete ban on the use of polythene bags across the province, effective from June 15. The decision was made during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, where officials from the Environment Department declared the production and use of polythene bags a criminal offense.

The cabinet unanimously endorsed the Environment Department’s recommendations, aiming to eliminate plastic bag usage in a phased manner across all districts within three months. A government spokesperson confirmed that the implementation will be gradual to ensure smooth enforcement and public compliance.

Environmental experts have long warned that polythene bags are one of the major contributors to pollution, particularly in urban drainage systems and water bodies. These non-biodegradable materials clog sewers, damage marine ecosystems, and pose serious health risks to both humans and animals. By banning their use, the Sindh government hopes to reduce plastic waste, improve urban cleanliness, and promote eco-friendly alternatives.

The move is part of a broader environmental strategy aimed at creating a cleaner, greener Sindh. Authorities have also indicated plans to raise public awareness and encourage the use of reusable cloth or paper bags as sustainable options.

This bold policy shift reflects a growing commitment to environmental reform and positions Sindh among the provinces actively working to mitigate the global plastic crisis.
