The United Nation Third Committee passed a resolution on 19 November 2025, expressing “serious concern” over increasing restrictions on religious freedom in Iran. With 79 votes in favor, the resolution highlights “harassment, intimidation, persecution, arbitrary arrest and detention” of religious minorities particularly Christians who have converted from Islam.
The resolution also condemns Iran for limiting the establishment of places of worship, calls for the release of religious practitioners imprisoned for their faith, and urges Tehran to eliminate discrimination based on belief.
Significantly, it singles out Iran’s use of Article 500 of its penal code a law used to prosecute Christians for “propaganda” stating that the enforcement of this article “has significantly escalated discrimination and violence” against religious minorities.
