‎A new study has found that vitamin C may help protect against lung diseases and other medical complications caused by traffic related air pollution, wildfires, and dust storms.

‎According to a medical website, the research conducted by experts from the School of Life Sciences at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research suggests that vitamin C can help prevent several medical complications.

‎The experts examined the impact of vitamin C in reducing PM2.5 induced lung inflammation and mitochondrial loss. PM2.5 refers to fine airborne particles commonly found in urban pollution.

‎According to the experts, PM2.5 pollution in large cities is often at unsafe levels. Even low levels of PM2.5 exposure can contribute to lung diseases, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary fibrosis, and lung cancer.

‎The research team discovered that antioxidant vitamin C supplements help reduce the negative effects of low level PM2.5 exposure.

‎Experts noted that taking vitamin C effectively prevents PM2.5 induced oxidative stress and inflammation. Vitamin C helps reduce harmful substances in cells and protects mitochondria the cell’s energy producers from damage caused by these fine particles.

‎Experts recommended that people exposed to air pollution and those suffering from lung diseases should take vitamin C as advised by medical professionals to reduce complications.
