What is Cause of Dry Lips in Winters?

Health experts warn that cracked or chapped lips are not merely a result of dry weather or dehydration; deficiencies in essential vitamins and minerals often play a significant role. This issue intensifies during winter, causing discomfort, burning sensations, and sores for many individuals.

According to medical specialists, a lack of B-complex vitamins – particularly B2 (Riboflavin), B3, B6, and B12 – can lead to dry, cracked lips and sores at the corners, a condition known as angular cheilitis. Vitamin C deficiency can also weaken the skin, resulting in cracked lips.

Experts note that iron and zinc deficiencies contribute to slow healing and recurrent lip cracking, affecting women and individuals with weakened immune systems more frequently.

Dr Asha Sklani, a dermatologist from Uttarakhand, explained that a deficiency of vitamin B12 can cause lips to become extremely dry and prone to cracking. She added that B12 plays a crucial role in the production of red blood cells, and its deficiency can also lead to anemia, numbness, tingling, and memory problems.

To prevent such issues, health professionals emphasize the importance of a balanced diet. Foods such as milk, yogurt, eggs, legumes, leafy green vegetables, and citrus fruits like oranges, tangerines, and lemons help address vitamin deficiencies, while meat, liver, chickpeas, and dry fruits are excellent sources of iron and zinc.

For treatment, doctors recommend taking B-complex vitamins under medical guidance, applying lip balm or petroleum jelly multiple times a day, avoiding the habit of frequently licking the lips, and maintaining adequate hydration.

Experts also caution that if severe pain, burning, or white patches appear on the corners of the lips, it could indicate a fungal infection. In such cases, immediate medical attention is necessary instead of self-treatment.
