The longest total solar eclipse of the century now has an official date, and experts are highlighting its extraordinary duration and visibility. On 16 August 2186, a rare celestial event will briefly turn day into night as the Moon’s shadow sweeps across parts of the world.
For 7 minutes and 29 seconds, the Sun will be completely obscured, making it the longest total eclipse in over 100 years. The path of totality will stretch from the Atlantic Ocean across northern South America and into the Caribbean.
Scientists say the unusual length of the eclipse will attract global attention, prompting travel plans, scientific missions and widespread public interest. During the event, daylight will dim, birds may fall silent, and the environment will momentarily shift into an eerie twilight as millions look upward to witness the spectacle.
