DIAMER – Two personnel of the Gilgit-Baltistan Scouts were martyred and another injured when terrorists attacked their checkpoint along the Karakoram Highway (KKH) near Chilas in the early hours of Friday, police said.

According to SSP Diamer Abdul Hameed, unknown gunmen opened fire from an elevated hilltop position at around 12:15am, hitting three soldiers. Naib Subedar Khush Dad and Havaldar Ashraf later succumbed to their injuries, while Lance Naik Sajid Ali is under treatment and reported out of danger.

Police teams, led by senior officials, reached the site within 20 minutes. Grenades and spent shells were recovered, with 17 bullet holes found at the checkpoint. The attackers fled the area before reinforcements arrived.

The GB Interior Minister, Shamsul Haq Lone, condemned the assault, terming it an attack on the peace of the region. He said the government would pursue the terrorists “to their ultimate fate.” Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan also took notice and ordered immediate action.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
