Peshawar (Staff Report):

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has decided to launch a detailed investigation into the recent cloudburst incidents and the growing impact of climate change in the province.

According to official sources, a special team has been formed comprising experts from the Federal Ministry of Environment, SUPARCO, and the Pakistan Forest Institute. The team will conduct a comparative study of flood-affected areas such as Buner and Swabi with other regions of the province to assess the intensity and causes of climate-related disasters.

The investigation will not only look into the immediate triggers of the recent cloudbursts but will also examine two decades of meteorological data to understand long-term climate patterns. The team is expected to prepare a comprehensive report identifying the underlying causes of floods and suggesting preventive measures to safeguard vulnerable communities.

Experts have warned that climate change is altering rainfall patterns at a rapid pace. Increased moisture in the atmosphere has intensified extreme weather events, including cloudbursts, which in recent weeks unleashed destructive flash floods across Buner and adjoining districts, causing significant loss of life and property.
