Karachi: Heavy monsoon rains wreaked havoc across Karachi on Wednesday, overflowing the Thado Dam in Gadap Town and unleashing a powerful flood stream that swept into Saadi Town and nearby settlements. Several neighborhoods were submerged under four to five feet of water, forcing residents to scramble to protect their belongings and vehicles.

The downpour also inundated major highways. A large section of the M-9 Motorway and Super Highway went under water, particularly near the well-known Al Habib Restaurant. Traffic between Karachi and Hyderabad came to a complete standstill for hours. According to the National Highways and Motorway Police, floodwaters surged up to the motorway’s edge, submerging significant stretches, though clearance operations later helped restore movement.

To ease the water flow, authorities began dismantling the central crash barriers on the M-9. A spokesperson for the Sindh Chief Minister’s House confirmed that rescue operations were underway, while the Karachi commissioner mobilized emergency teams. The provincial government also called in army units to assist with relief and evacuation efforts.

Across Karachi, clogged drains and a collapsed drainage system turned entire localities into water channels. In Saadi Town, Gadap, and areas along the Super Highway, residents faced widespread flooding and chaos.

Meanwhile, the Sindh government announced the closure of all educational institutions in the city for safety reasons. Officials warned that if the rains continued, the situation could worsen further, and emergency agencies have been directed to remain on high alert.
