Bluebottle jellyfish return to Karachi coast, swimmers warned

Karachi’s coastline faces an unwelcome seasonal visitor as bluebottle jellyfish—known locally as *neeli machli*—have begun washing ashore along Clifton and Hawkesbay beaches. Lifeguards are urging families and swimmers to exercise caution, as the stinging creatures pose a painful threat to anyone venturing into the surf.

The bluebottle, or *Physalia physalis*, isn’t a single animal but a colony of organisms. Their long, trailing tentacles deliver a potent venom that causes immediate, sharp pain and, in sensitive individuals, can trigger severe allergic reactions.

“The wind direction has shifted, pushing these colonies toward the shallows,” said a senior coastal warden stationed at Clifton. “We’ve already seen a spike in minor sting reports over the last 48 hours. The biggest mistake people make is thinking they’re harmless because they look like bubbles.”

The surge in sightings typically aligns with the post-monsoon currents that sweep through the Arabian Sea. While the stings are rarely fatal, they are notoriously difficult to treat on the beach.

Health experts advise against the common myth of using urine to neutralize the venom, which can actually cause the remaining stingers to release more toxins. Instead, the standard protocol involves rinsing the affected area with warm water—not cold—and seeking medical attention if the pain persists or if the victim experiences difficulty breathing.

Local authorities have started placing warning flags at popular swimming spots, yet many weekend visitors continue to ignore the caution. The jellyfish are often difficult to spot in murky water, and their tentacles can remain active even after the creature has washed up dead on the sand.

For those heading to the shore this weekend, the message from the rescue teams is blunt: keep your shoes on and stay out of the water if you see purple or blue bubbles bobbing in the tide. The jellyfish presence is expected to linger as long as the current remains favorable, potentially keeping swimmers out of the water for the next few weeks.
